Spinal Cord Injuries During Birth - Claims

Whilst the majority of births and deliveries run smoothly others face complications which can have traumatic or even fatal consequences.

For example, if the baby’s head is in an awkward position during delivery, it will need rotating to help the baby along the birth canal. Forceps, which are placed around the baby’s head, may be used to help repositioning, and with some gentle pulling, assist delivery.

During this type of procedure it is extremely important that doctors are mindful of the baby's spinal cord. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that carries messages between the brain and the rest of the body and if the doctor applies too much force when trying to deliver or reposition the baby then the spinal cord can be damaged.

Risk factors for birth trauma include the following:

  • Large-for-date infants, especially babies that weigh more than 4500g
  • Instrumental deliveries, especially forceps
  • Vaginal breech delivery
  • Abnormal or excessive traction during delivery

Diagnosis of such an injury can be difficult in newborns and may be mistaken for cerebral palsy as the child develops and is usually made by using an MRI or CT scan.

Effect of spinal cord damage

The death rate for birth related spinal cord injury is very high, and those babies that do survive may have a very poor outlook and require lifelong care with daily activities and rehabilitation.

A severely disabled child will need to be encouraged and supported by a specialist team of physical, occupational and speech therapists and other medical professionals to help manage pain control or bladder and bowel function. Secondary complications of a spinal cord injury are not being able to walk or move and include muscle wasting and contractures, pressure ulcers (bed sores) and pneumonia.
