Stafford Hospital Nursing Care Under the Spotlight Again

Last month the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) made a striking off order against a registered midwife, who was employed by Stafford Hospital as a healthcare support worker, after they found that she had physically pulled a patient out of the bathroom in a state of undress, and called him an animal that was no longer human.

The spotlight is once again on the poor care provided by the nursing staff at the Stafford hospital. This time the focus is on a senior nurse in the Accident & Emergency department and her colleague.

An NMC misconduct tribunal is currently hearing how so as to prevent breaching 4 hour waiting time targets, both nurses inaccurately recorded patient discharge times from A&E, asked other members of staff to do the same, falsified medical records by stating patients had been transferred when they had not and transferred patients when they had not be adequately assessed by medical staff. Patients were also left in soiled sheets.

Their fitness to practice is being questioned in light of these allegations and the allegations that they swore near patients and made racist comments about Asian members of staff. One of the nurses refused to lift a seriously ill patient out of a wheelchair and referred to her as 'a little monkey' when she did not take medication given to her.

The patient sadly died the following day and it has been claimed by a former nurse that whilst the senior nurse was not to blame for the patient's death the woman had been given "a very uncared-for and undignified last 24 hours".

Your rights

You have a right to expect to receive a high level of care and the NHS Constitution says that ‘you should always be treated with dignity and respect, in accordance with your human rights and the NHS commits to ensure that services are provided in a clean and safe environment that is fit for purpose, based on national best practice’.

The Constitution also states that ‘you have the right to have any complaint you make about the NHS dealt with efficiently and have it investigated properly’.
